Solving “Windows cannot find PROGRAM.exe.” in Windows 10

Solving “Windows cannot find PROGRAM.exe.” in Windows 10

A recent Windows 10 update has caused the operating system to be unable to launch a variety of software that was previously working. The message you are likely getting will be similar to the one below with “PROGRAM” being replaced by the name of your software:

“Windows cannot find ‘PROGRAM.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.”

Whilst the majority of software can be affected we are primarily hearing reports of Advent, Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, Hewlett Packard (HP), Kodak, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark, OKI, Ricoh, Samsung, Sharp and Xerox inkjet/laser printer users experiencing this error.

How can I stop this message?

Thankfully resolving this issue and continuing to print as normal, is relatively simple. All that is required is removing the well intentioned Windows update that has caused this.

We are sure that Microsoft will patch this issue shortly, but in the meantime users are encouraged to take the following steps:

1. Click the Windows Start icon on the bottom left of your screen.

2. Click “Search” and locate ‘Programs and Features’ using the search bar.

3. Click ‘View Installed Updates’ on the left side.

4. Search for KB4560960, KB4535996 or KB4557957 using the bar on the top right.

5. Once located, select it and click ‘Uninstall’ at the top.

6. Restart your computer/laptop and try to print something.

This post is dealing primarily with the KB4560960, KB4535996 or KB4557957 updates that caused issues in June 2020. If you have reason to believe another update is causing a problem for you, search for this code on ‘Step 4’ instead.

What if my printer still doesn’t print?

Should you still receive “Windows cannot find PROGRAM.exe.” message, we recommend uninstalling the printer driver from your Windows 10 PC/laptop. Do do this, please take the steps below:

1. Click the Windows Start icon on the bottom left of your screen.

2. Click “Search” and locate ‘Devices and Printers’ using the search bar.

3. Now, right click on your Printer.

4. Select ‘Remove Device’ from the drop down box and select “Yes”.

With the printer removed, you can normally remove and re-insert the USB cable from your printer, to get the driver re-installed. If however you have the printer connected wirelessly or this doesn’t reinstall the driver, we recommend locating the relevant driver/software from the manufacturers site.

We hope this guide has helped and you are now up and running. If you are, please get in touch via any of our social media platforms.
