For these cartridges we recommend injecting the following amount of cyan, magenta and yellow ink:
CL-546/8289B004: 9ml (3ml of each colour)
CL-546XL/8288B004: 13.5ml (4.5ml of each colour)
The fill holes of these cartridges are very small and you will have trouble getting a regular syringe to fit. I recommend using the tool provided with many refill kits, a 2mm drill bit or a square shafted awl to widen it.
We recommend sticking to the lower fill for the CL-546 as these cartridges have a smaller sponge and are physically restricted inside the cartridge. As such over filling them can result in ink spilling inside your printer.
Once this cartridge has been refilled your printer will retain the same ink level estimate it has previously. These cartridges have no way of knowing that they now contain fresh ink and only estimate ink levels based upon how much printing had been done previously. Eventually your printer will believe that the cartridge is completely empty and prevent you from printing until a small prompt has been given. More information on this topic can be found here.
This guide is intended purely to show where to inject the ink into these cartridges and how much we recommend using. For full refill instructions for these cartridges please click here.
Canon CL-546 Video Refill Guide
Why no Canon CL-546XL Video Refill Guide?
Sadly I haven’t had an empty CL-546XL (8288B004) thrust in front of me for refilling just yet. I will however endeavour to produce a video as soon as possible. Until then, you can refill your cartridge by following the method above and simply injecting 4.5ml of cyan, magenta and yellow ink instead of the 3ml mentioned.
These cartridges fit a variety of Canon printers including the Canon Pixma iP2850, MG2450, MG2550, MG2550S, MG2555, MG2555S, MG2950, MG3050, MG3051, MG3053 and MX495 inkjet printers.
