HP 301 Black Ink Cartridge Review

HP 301 Black Ink Cartridge Review

This cartridge is a standard capacity unit supplied with a variety of printers and many people don’t realise there are any alternatives when it comes to buying replacements. However this cartridge contains much less ink than the HP 301XL cartridge also available for all compatible printers. In fact if you open up the cartridge (as demonstrated in the video below) the sponge inside is very small and fills less than half of the cartridge meaning even if you decide to refill the cartridge yourself it is still restricted.

How much ink is in the HP 301 Black?

This cartridge contains 5ml of black ink.

How many pages will the HP 301 Black print?

You can expect to get approximately 190 pages from this cartridge if you are printing with an average page coverage of 5%. However in reality it is likely to be less than this as 5% is a pretty light coverage for an average user.

For more on page coverage please check out our article on the subject here.

What are your thoughts on this cartridge?

As all machines that accept this cartridge will also take the HP 301XL that contains more ink it should always be more cost effective to shell out a little extra for the high capacity alternative. Those looking to save a little more should bear in mind these cartridges can be refilled and remanufactured HP 301XL cartridges are also available.

What printers is this cartridge compatible with?

HP Deskjet 1000
HP Deskjet 1050
HP Deskjet 1050A All-in-One
HP Deskjet 2050
HP Deskjet 2050A
HP Deskjet 2050s
HP Deskjet 3000
HP Deskjet 3050
HP Deskjet 3050A e-All-in-One

Definitely less than 150 pages . I am a masters student and I just bought a new catri ridge for £12. I only managed to print 4 journal articles roughly 30 pages each. Not impressed

We rechargeable HP301 black ink cartridge. Print several times better then not print. On the second page not print anything. Do not reset cartuşuş?

Once i refill it the printer is not recognising it.how can i arrange this problem?

    1. RefreshCarts

The cartridges not being recognised by the printer is almost always caused by an issue with the electronic contacts. In this instance I would recommend the following:
-Remove the cartridge from the printer
-Turn the printer off from the machine itself
-Run a dry cloth across the gold contacts on the front of the cartridge
      -Turn the printer back on
      -Re-install the cartridge again
If this doesn't help then sadly it is likely that the contacts on the front of the cartridge have been damaged/ceased to function electronically during the refilling process.

I can not make copies after refill the 300 black, i can only print . (ink level empty)
    i use a 3050 printer.
    any ideas ?

    1. RefreshCarts

If you are able to print from the PC I can see no reason why your printer would stop you from doing a copy. Are you getting any specific error messages? What is happening when you are pressing the Black/Colour copy buttons?

how much ink is in a 301xl and how much in the colour cartridge? please

    1. RefreshCarts

Not sure how official these figures are but most people say 8ml in the HP 301xl black and 6ml in the colour.

I have refilled my cartridge. I printed fine the first time I did it. It was empty within about 20 print pages. It now won't print. What have I done wrong?

    1. RefreshCarts

It may be that you have used up the ink that was left in the printhead prior to refilling and have hit a bit of air between this and the fresh ink. I would recommend performing 1-3 cleaning cycles from your HP software to pull through the fresh ink.

      Hope this helps.

I've refilled the cartridge and I've managed get ink flowing out of the printhead using suction with a syringe, but I can't print more than a page or two. If I suck some ink out after that, I can print another page, but it seems like the printhead won't draw any ink on its own. I've taken care to inject ink slowly and not to overfill the sponge. Do you have any idea what the problem could be and how to solve it?

    1. RefreshCarts

It sounds as if the printhead of the cartridge has ceased to function mechanically. Sadly I cannot offer a solution to a mechanical problem with this cartridge.

I have just inserted HP301XL black into my 3050 all in one J610 printer, as I have done dozens of times before, and it is giving the message that the cartridge is not compatible. I have tried turning the printer on and off and reinserted the cartridge a number of times but it always comes up with the same message. Have you met this before? Does it mean I need a new printer suddenly? I have had it some years, it's true, but changing the cartridge has always been a piece of cake before.
