The high cost of ink cartridges can be a real thorn in the side for frequent printers. But before you resign yourself to a lifetime of shelling out big bucks, consider the power of refilling! Refilling compatible cartridges with fresh ink can be a budget-friendly and eco-conscious way to keep your printer going. However, it’s important to know that not all cartridges are created equal when it comes to refillability.

Refill-Friendly Cartridges:
There are many ink cartridges out there that can be refilled with nothing but a small bottle of ink and a syringe. We have spent many hours creating video guides for such cartridge, and have helped millions of people with them. YouTube is a fantastic guide for working out if your specific cartridge can be refilled, just search for your ink cartridge number and see what is available.
The design of ink cartridge that can most easily (and reliably) be refilled are those that feature printheads on the cartridge. With this in mind, I filmed a short video demonstrating the process sometime ago. I may be a little biased, but I think it is a great way of seeing what you are getting yourself into.
With this said, there are a few things to consider before you get your hands dirty, literally…
Potential Issues:
We would all like to think that ink cartridges can simply be pierced and have fresh ink squirted in. Sadly, however, this is not the case. Printer manufacturers are financially motivated to have you continue buying their product, and who can blame them? Additionally, not all refilling products are created equally, and there is no “one size fits all” solution to refilling.
- Cartridge design: Some cartridges are built with mechanisms to prevent refilling, like one-time-use chips or self-destructing components. In these cases, refilling might be impossible or impractical.
- Compatibility: Not all third-party refill kits are compatible with all cartridges. Ensure you choose a refill kit specifically designed for your cartridge model to avoid leaks or damage to your printer.
- Quality matters: Using low-quality refill ink can lead to printing problems like smudging, streaking, or clogged print heads. Opt for reputable refill kits or services that prioritize high-quality ink.
Alternatives to Refilling:
If all of this sounds a little complicated, or you are not feeling up to it, there are alternative ways of reducing your printing cost. We have covered lots of these previously, but here are our two favourites.
- High-yield cartridges: These cartridges hold more ink, reducing the frequency of replacements. While the upfront cost is higher, the cost per page tends to be lower, making them ideal for high-volume printing.
- Ink tank printers: These innovative printers utilize refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges, significantly lowering ink costs in the long run. Contemporary examples of this being the Canon Maxify and Epson’s EcoTank series of inkjet printers. However, the initial cost of the printer itself can be higher.
The Final Verdict:
Refilling ink cartridges can be a viable option for many inkjet printers, offering significant cost savings. However, it’s crucial to research your specific cartridge model and choose compatible, high-quality refilling products. We have created video guides for refilling many popular ink cartridges on our YouTube channel, but there are an incredible amount of resources online that can show you exactly what to do.
If refilling seems daunting, consider high-yield cartridges or ink tank printers for a more convenient ink management experience. We sell high-quality compatible and remanufactured cartridges on our store, all of which come fully-guaranteed for your complete satisfaction.
We hope this has helped, but please let us know any further questions by email or on Facebook.
