We have recently been made aware of updates in Hewlett Packard software that have disabled the use of older inkjet cartridges with certain printers. The cartridges affected at present include those in the HP 364, HP 950/HP 951 and HP 301 series.
Why am I getting this message?
The “Older Generation Cartridge Installed” message will appear in any printer that has been produced with a certain version of HP firmware or has recently received updates for their printer via HP software. Once this update has been supplied any older versions of brand new Hewlett Packard cartridges or recycled alternatives will be rejected and you will not be able to continue printing.
At present there is no workaround for this message and the solution is to install a HP 364, HP 950, HP 951 or HP 301 cartridge that the Hewlett Parkard software considers to be a newer version.
How can I tell if a cartridge will be okay?
When it comes to genuine HP 364, HP 950, HP 951 or HP 301 cartridges you can tell if a cartridge will be accepted by your printer by simply examining the back of the packaging. Next to the warranty date on “Newer Generation” cartridges you will notice that it states ‘v1’.
This is great news for those looking to buy new cartridges, as it makes the process very easy, but bad news for users who have purchased cartridges in bulk to use at a later date.
Users of refilled or remanufactured cartridges are substantially more likely to receive the “Older Generation Cartridge Installed” message as the production of such cartridges rely upon used (and inherently older) empty cartridges. However as time passes, remanufacturers of these cartridges will receive newer and newer units making this problem much less common.
What printers are affected?
This is a little bit of a gray area sadly, as a printer compatibility with “Older Generation” cartridges depends not only on what the model is, but if firmware updates have been accepted by users of slightly older printers.
