HP OfficeJet 4650: Printer Basics

HP OfficeJet 4650: Printer Basics

These brief guides below show you how to perform some basic troubleshooting tasks with your Hewlett Packard OfficeJet 4650 printer. Although these procedures are quick and easy to perform, they are essential in resolving most print quality issues.

How do I print a test page on a HP OfficeJet 4650?

Printing a test page from your printer is a great first step in troubleshooting print quality issues with your HP OfficeJet 4650. A print quality report like this separates all of thew inks used, allowing easy identification of the cause.

From the main screen of the printer navigate down the menus using the printers touchscreen as described below.

  1. Swipe along the screen until the Setup option is visible.
  2. Press Setup from this menu.
  3. Press Tools from this menu.
  4. From here, scroll down to Print Quality Report and press it.

The completed ‘Print Quality Report’ shows a breakdown of all the inks used by your printer is several different shades. This information should allow you to see if there is a particular colour that is weak, missing or contains lines. if you notice any issues, I would recommend seeing the section below on basic printhead cleaning. This sheet also shows some basic patterns that can be used to identify alignment issues with the printer and advice on resolving them.

How do I do a cleaning cycle on my HP OfficeJet 4650?

Improving the print quality of the HP OfficeJet 4650 is an automated process that is easy to access. The ‘Cartridge Head Clean’ detailed below pushes ink through the respective printhead and will hopefully dislodge anything causing print quality issues.

To perform a ‘Cartridge Head Clean’ directly from your printer, please follow the simple steps below.

  1. Swipe along the screen until the Setup option is visible.
  2. Press Setup from this menu.
  3. Press Tools from this menu.
  4. Finally, press Clean Cartridges from this menu.

Your printer will then perform the clean and produce a ‘Print Quality Diagnostic’ page. If you notice that print quality issues remain, an option for ‘second-level’ cleaning option is offered. This option uses up more ink and another sheet of paper, but is sadly necessary in some circumstances.

If you notice continuing print quality issues even after 2-3 cleans, then unfortunately there many be a stubborn blockage present or a mechanical issue that cannot be resolved. Fortunately, ink comes directly from the cartridges of the OfficeJet 4650, so a resolution can normally be found by simply changing the offending ink cartridge.

How do I print an alignment page on a HP OfficeJet 4650?

If you notice an odd hazy effect on your prints or something resembling a shadow behind your printed characters, it may be time to perform an alignment calibration or two from your printer. These alignment cycles help your printer apply ink accurately and are essential maintenance for your HP OfficeJet 4650.

To perform an alignment directly from your printer, please follow the simple steps below.

  1. Swipe along the screen until the Setup option is visible.
  2. Press Setup from this menu.
  3. Press Align Printer from this menu.
  4. Wait for the alignment page to be printed.
  5. Place the alignment page face down on the scanner bed.
  6. Press OK from your printers touchscreen.

Your Hewlett Packard OfficeJet 4650 printer will then perform a brief calibration procedure, hopefully improving the quality of your prints. If issues remain, it may be necessary to repeat the process. Sadly resolving stubborn alignment issues is not so simple, so please contact a printer technician, Hewlett Packard or wherever it was purchased from if the issue persists.

I hope that you have found the guides above useful, but if you have any other questions please do let us know in the comments below.
