Are Old or Empty Ink Cartridges Worth Anything?

Are Old or Empty Ink Cartridges Worth Anything?

If you have ever had a pile of ink cartridges that have been previously used (or even ones from an old printer) you may have wondered if they are worth anything? As technology advances and printer models evolve, it’s natural to wonder about the value of outdated or unused ink cartridges. Let’s explore this topic in-depth to shed light on whether those old cartridges gathering dust in your drawer could hold any value.

Empty Ink Cartridges

This is one that we are most frequently asked about. Recycling empty ink cartridges is a great way to reduce waste and contribute to environmental sustainability. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Return to Manufacturer: Many printer manufacturers, including Lexmark, HP, Canon, and Epson, offer recycling programs for their own genuine ink cartridges. They often provide prepaid shipping labels or drop-off locations where you can return your empty cartridges for recycling.
  2. In-Store Recycling Boxes: Some stationary retailers (and supermarkets) have recycling programs for ink cartridges in store. You can drop off your empty cartridges at their stores, and they will ensure they are properly recycled.
  3. Local Recycling Schemes: Check with your local council’s recycling scheme to see if they accept ink cartridges for recycling. Some municipalities have special programs for electronic waste, which may include ink cartridges. Here in Torbay, you can even include empty ink cartridges in with your doorstep recycling collections.
  4. Mail-In Programs: There are various mail-in recycling programs available where you can send your empty ink cartridges for recycling. Some programs even offer incentives or rewards for recycling. If you regularly end up with a lot of empty original ink cartridges, you may want to check out The Recycling Factory or Easy Printer Cartridge Recycling.
  5. Non-profit Organizations: Some non-profit organizations collect empty ink cartridges as part of their fundraising efforts. You can donate your empty cartridges to them, and they will recycle them for you. I would advise keeping an eye out when you next visit a charity shop, and making a mental note for the presence of a recycling bin

Remember to remove any packaging materials or tape from the cartridges before recycling them. By recycling your empty ink cartridges, you’re helping to conserve resources and reduce the environmental impact of printing.

“Out of Date” Ink Cartridges

If you have come to use your ink cartridges and have noticed the official date on the packaging has passed, then please don’t worry. As ink cartridges are inherently filled with liquid, manufacturers go to great length to ensure they are well sealed to stop ink escaping. This means the ink inside has no place to go and should remain usable for the foreseeable future. This is especially true if your ink cartridge doesn’t feature a printhead.

If however, your ink cartridges do have a printhead, there is a greater chance that the ink may have dried at the point of exit from the cartridge. If you install the cartridge and experience any issues, I would recommend checking out our basic troubleshooting on this topic.

With the extended shelf life of these cartridges, they remain useful and therefore have more value. Which leads us to our final section…

Unwanted Ink Cartridges

The short answer is yes, old ink cartridges can indeed be worth something. If you have a local store that may be able to offer you a little money or in-store credit (like us), I would make this your first port of call. Failing this, we normally advise simply popping them onto Ebay and recouping a little money.

The value of the unwanted ink cartridges will vary depending on several factors. Here are a few points that are worth considering…

  1. Condition: The condition of the cartridge plays a significant role in determining its value. Unused, unopened cartridges are typically worth more than partially used ones. Cartridges that are still sealed in their original packaging are more desirable for recycling or resale purposes.
  2. Compatibility: Older ink cartridges may not be compatible with newer printer models, reducing their resale value. However, if you have cartridges that are compatible with popular or widely used printer models, they may still hold some value to buyers or recycling centres.
  3. Manufacturer: Ink cartridges produced by the printers’ manufacturer will hold much more value. If you have remanufactured or compatible alternatives, they will certainly be worth less to a potential user.

In conclusion, while old ink cartridges may not fetch significant sums of money, they can still hold value through recycling programs, trade-in incentives, or resale opportunities. Before discarding your old cartridges, consider exploring recycling options or checking if your printer manufacturer offers any incentives for returning empty cartridges.

We hope this has helped, but please let us know any further questions by email or on Facebook.
