Refilling Canon CL-541 & CL-541XL Colour Ink Cartridges

Refilling Canon CL-541 & CL-541XL Colour Ink Cartridges

Canon CL-541 Refill PositionsFor these cartridges we recommend injecting the following amount of cyan, magenta and yellow ink:

CL-541/5227B005AA: 4ml (12ml Total)
CL-541XL/5226B005AA: 7ml (21ml Total)

The fill holes of these cartridges are very small and you will have trouble getting a regular syringe to fit. I recommend using the tool provided with many refill kits, a 2mm drill bit or a square shafted awl to widen it.

We recommend sticking to the lower fill for the CL-541 as these cartridges have a smaller sponge and are physically restricted inside the cartridge. As such over filling them can result in ink spilling inside your printer.

Once this cartridge has been refilled your printer will retain the same ink level estimate it has previously. These cartridges have no way of knowing that they now contain fresh ink and only estimate ink levels based upon how much printing had been done previously. Eventually your printer will believe that the cartridge is completely empty and prevent you from printing until a small prompt has been given. More information on this topic can be found here.

This guide is intended purely to show where to inject the ink into these cartridges and how much we recommend using. For full refill instructions for these cartridges please click here.

how to reset ink level in Canon Pixma MX525?

    1. RefreshCarts

There is actually no need to reset the ink level estimate with these cartridges. Once the printer believes the cartridge is empty it will ask for a small prompt from you (holding down Stop/Reset/Resume for 5 seconds) and once this is done the printer will carry on printing until the ink in the cartridge has all been used.

      I hope this helps.

After held down Reset Button, the "C" (colour) led is on and it refuses to print colour on my pages. It still prints, but only black. Any suggestions?

  2. andy

Would that be the same in a pixma 3250?

    1. RefreshCarts

Indeed. The Canon Pixma MG3250 takes the very same cartridges.

Have refilled and performed deep head clean three times but still only printing magenta. Any ideas? Thanks, Ian.

Thanks for this Matthew. Just followed the instructions and refilled the ink on my new Pixma 3250. Worked first time! and I know from all my shenanigans last week (Debating whether to try new cartridges on my old pixma) that the customer service at refresh cartridges is simply excellent 🙂

I got a new canon 2150 in 2013, I used the ink in the colour cart. I filled it and the pc still tells me it has no ink it says 0 of 100, have you any ideas?

    1. RefreshCarts

This is actually perfectly normal. The second to last paragraph of the guide covers this very issue.

Do you have any recommendation on where to buy refill ink?

    1. RefreshCarts

We have a fine selection of refill kits and bulk ink in our store. Feel free to check them out: http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/

Where can I buy the ink and syringes please and how much would black , yellow, magenta and cyan ink cost me ?

I own a Canon Pixma MG3250 and have CL-541 tri colour and PG-540 ink cartridges, I did not know this was possible

so buy 21ml of each ink and put 4ml in all three for tri colour but how many ml for the black ?

  9. Gavin

Hi – I fill my canon 540/541 all the time but the 540 black always go all squonky like very fast draft after a few refills.. Colour 4541 are fine.. Anyone have any answers for me?

  10. Roger

Would this work in a pixma mx459??

  11. OMID

Is it the same procedure for Canon Pixima MG4250 for refilling the ink? I mean red (top) ,Yellow(right), Blue is on the left right?

    1. RefreshCarts

I am happy to confirm this process is indeed accurate for the Canon Pixma MG4250.

  12. Peter

Is there a way of resetting the ink level indicators.
