The most interesting and genuinely entertaining piece of printer related news I have heard in a while is the adaptation of a common receipt printer into and old school style video game. Believe it or not some clever sods have gone and done it to great effect. The result is a game that reminds me of the classic game ‘Night Driver’ and is controlled using a PS3 controller.
Joshua Noble, Martin Fuchs, and Philip Whitfield created this wonderful game for the “Let’s feed the future workshop”, organized by creativeapplications.net as a part of the OFFF Festival in Barcelona on June 8th 2011. Please check out the fantastic video below:
As you probably gathered the moving light represents the player and built in sensors accurately determine the player’s position on the generated track. If contact it made with any of the obstacles of barriers then it is game over. The score will total up on the left of the screen based on how long and far you have travelled. Due to the limited length of fax rolls 50m is the maximum distance your light can move and as the developer jokes “ecologically it’s pretty much a disaster, just like any real car”.
As this is an independent project I don’t expect to see these units lining the shelves of video game stores anytime soon. If however like me you would like to get your hands on the game the online version of ‘Receipt Racer’ can be played here.
Be sure to let us know what you think and also check out Joshua Noble’s Website.
