Fun 3D Printing Developments

Fun 3D Printing Developments

Since I last wrote on the subject of 3D printing  there have been a few interesting innovations I would like to share with you today. Each one has an accompanying video so you can see exactly what I am talking about in action.

Let’s begin with the worlds first functional and affordable item of ready-to-wear 3D printed clothing commercially available. Developed by Continuum Fashion it is a rather nice looking bikini comprised of small circles placed in a geometric pattern so it fits flush with the relevant curves. If you are interested you can hear the developers talk more about this item by watching the video below:

Next we have a project by Markus Kayser that aims to highlight the abundance of energy and materials for manufacturing found in the desert. He uses a solar powered 3D printer to create some wonderful glass sculptures from sand around him. Whilst this project does not claim to be directly tackling our planets energy crisis I find if refreshing to see someone challenging our perceptions of the usefulness of such a natural resource as the desert:

Finally we have the continuing work of Theo Jansen and his efforts in producing his new form of life named Strandbeests. In recent weeks fans of his work have began creating miniature versions using 3D printers that are “born” ready to move and are for sale from Shapeways. Theo claims this if the the Strandbeests charming us into producing them and is in-fact their way of multiplying and the code used to create them is in effect their own DNA. His philosophical viewpoint aside please take a moment check them out in action:

Thats all for now but if you have any comments of other developments you think deserve some attention please do let us know in the comments section below.
