Drum LED flashing after changing a Brother DR2100 Drum Unit

Drum LED flashing after changing a Brother DR2100 Drum Unit

In the Brother HL-2140 and several other printers compatible with the DR2100 drum unit a prompt must be given by the user for the printer to realise a new drum has been installed. This procedure needs to be followed to reset an internal page counter in the printer that estimates the remaining life of the installed drum. If this reset is not performed then your printer will continue to warn you of Drum life end soon‘. Your printer does this via the Drum LED on the body of the printer which will flash on for  2 seconds and then off for three (and repeat). Luckily the drum reset for these printers is very easy and only takes a few seconds.

Please Note: If your printer has been using the drum before the reset was entered this will throw out the accuracy of the drum by the equivalent amount of pages. As such you may find the quality of your prints may deteriorate prematurely.

What printers does this reset work for?

In addition to the Brother HL-2140 the drum reset detailed below also works for the HL-2150N and HL-2170W.

How do I reset the drum unit for these printers?

  1. Ensure the printer is turned on and otherwise ready to print.HL-2140 JPG
  2. Open the front cover of your printer.
  3. Hold down the Go button until all LEDs are lit (this takes approximately 4 seconds).
  4. Remove the combined drum unit and toner cartridge assembly from your printer.
  5. Re-install the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into your printer.
  6. Close the front cover of your printer.

The Drum LED will now of stopped blinking/flashing and you can continue printing for an estimated 12,000 pages. If the LED remains lit and is flashing in the pattern mentioned earlier then please run through this process again ensuring all LED lights are lit when holding down Go.

May I be the first to say, thank you for posting this. It was just what I needed this evening for my Brother HL-2170W. I've had it for 5 years (bought when I decided in my 40s to get Associates, and now working on two Bachelors) and this is first time replacing drum. For the price of the drum (even a remanufactured one), I almost decided to just upgrade to a newer printer… maybe one with a scanner, and that would print in color, and maybe brew my coffee… FInally decided it was just simpler to keep using this printer for a couple of more years. So maybe out of loyalty also, this printer and I are on a road together to completion of these degrees. I'd like to say the same for my netbook computer… am now on my third one. Probably last one since they are now 'old school.' But I really liked them. Sorry for the ramble, but you see, you posted this a couple of years back, and you never know when it's going to help someone. I really do appreciate it! My drum light is no longer flashing. Take care and best wishes.
