This is a wireless, colour inkjet, multifunction printer with a built in media card centre. Now this should tell you pretty much everything you need to know as far as functionality goes. It is essentially a printer, scanner, copier that can operate wirelessly and print directly from your Sony Memory Stick/Pro Duo or SD card.
The printer comes with everything you need to use it wirelessly straight out of the box and is as easy to set up as any other wireless device. It is possible to hard wire it to you PC or laptop using a port tucked in under the scanner bed but the USB A-B cable needed is not included. In all honesty if you are not going to use this printer wirelessly I would recommend shopping around for another brother printer that has exact functionality you require to save yourself some money. However if you are looking for a printer that is essentially this printer but without wireless the DCP-197C would be my recommendation .
At 28/35ppm (pages per minute) this is a pretty speedy machine and although it is a little slower can produce excellent high quality photo prints, with the additional option of borderless printing. With a scan resolution of 19,200 x 19,200dpi (dots per inch) the same high quality can be expected from the built in scanner/copier.
In summery the Brother DCP-J315W is ideal for home with its excellent range of features and is also thoroughly recommendable due to high quality of the prints and scans it can produce, its low running cost and its compact, minimalist design. Whilst the build quality is excellent I would not recommend it for use in a busy office simply because I know how much abuse such a machine is likely to get. If intended for office use the lack of a fax machine may also be a disappointment.
