Today we are going to be taking a look at the BCL CD-360MV Dynamic Headset. This product is essentially a large set of padded headphones, with an adjustable microphone built in to the side and comes with a lengthy 2.2m cable and built in volume control. These units are typically priced around £6 meaning they fall firmly into the category of budget peripherals.
These headsets come in black or pink and they look pretty nice. They are not particularly stylish but only the most egocentric of computer user will be ashamed to be seen wearing one. The build quality is also great and first impressions are that this unit will last many years if treated right. A flexible almost leather strap runs independently on the inside of the metal headband to avoid it digging in and as a result rest comfortably on your head. The padded ear cushions are covered in a soft leather and sit comfortably over your ears. I found that the headset had to be adjusted to its very maximum so the headphones would reach both of my ears at once though. Although I do have a generously sized head it is far from overly large so this product may be worth avoiding if you have the latter.
The adjustable boom mic rotates easily and the long flexible neck means getting the perfect position for recording is easy. However it is positioned on the left ear piece and can only be rotated 130 degrees anti-clockwise so if for some reason you prefer your mic to run from the right ear you are out of luck.
Whilst I am very happy with the headset I am currently using, it is actually the third unit I un-boxed. The first would only record my voice as a relative whisper through the microphone and the right earphone emitted no sound at all on the second one I tried. So with a 33% success rate I do not feel I can comfortably recommend this particular peripheral.
It is a shame such a potentially great headset has been let down by an inconsistent manufacturing quality or sub-standard quality checking as it would have been a great purchase for anyone who needed one. If however you are willing to take the risk or don’t mind getting the unit replaced if a problem should occur the BCL CD-360MV is certainly worth a try.
