Problem with a Epson Toner Cartridge or Drum Unit

Toner Cartridge is showing as 'Empty' or 'Low' prematurely

Most Epson Toner cartridges work on a basis of page counting in order to work out how much toner has been used from the cartridge.

If the cartridge displays 'empty' from the first use it may be that the chip itself is faulty which is causing the printer to believe there is an incorrect toner level in the cartridge; please contact us as it may be that we need to replace the cartridge.

If the cartridge read as full when you first installed it and now displays as 'empty' before you were expecting then this would lead us to believe that the toner from the cartridge has actually been utilised.  Because the printer doesn't actually look inside the cartridge to see the visible toner level but instead keeps its own record of the amount of toner utilised it wouldn't be possible that underfilling has caused the printer to report the cartridge as empty.  In order to stop the cartridge appearing as though it was faulty by stopping to print while the printer stated there was still toner remaining it is usual for the printer to verge on the side of caution so there may still be a small amount of toner remaining.  This is a characteristic of the printer and shouldn't be cause for concern.

If the cartridge is still reading as having toner present but it is not printing then before getting in contact with us please try removing the cartridge from the printer and gently rocking it from side to side; often toner can 'clump' in to one end of the cartridge and performing this process can distribute it evenly throughout the toner cartridge.

While manufacturers give an page yield for cartridges, realistically the amount of prints you will get from a cartridge is likely to be much less than this. This is because manufacturers use a standard page coverage of 5% (set by ISO/IEC 19752) to determine page yield.

If you are concerned that you may not be getting sufficient pages from your cartridges or would simply like to check what kind of page coverage you are printing we have written an article on a free program to calculate coverage.

If after reading the above you believe that the cartridge still should have lasted substantially longer than you achieved then please do contact us as it's possible that you have received a faulty unit.
