This error message will almost certainly be returned when using a compatible printer cartridge in a Lexmark printer that has had the printer firmware updated to reject a specific series of compatible printer cartridges.  The printer performing an unprompted firmware update would potentially also explain why a printer cartridge that was working correctly suddenly then becomes 'unauthenticated' by the machine.

 

We suggest that owners of Lexmark printers which can take compatible cartridges (These machines will utilise at least four incredibly simple ink tanks which don't feature an integrated printer head but rather a simple hole where the ink comes out the bottom) turn off automatic firmware updates from their printer software and refuse any updates that they are prompted to accept to avoid reoccurrence of this problem in the future.
